Democracy's Challenge- Reclaiming the Public Role
The event will be featuring speaker Vijay Prashad* and will follow with small group, deliberative dialogues about our roles in creating our democracy.
The event is on October 20, 2009 from 6pm until 8pm in the Student Union Ballroom.
*Vijay Prashad is a Professor of International Studies and a George and Martha Kellner chair in South Asian History at Trinity College. He has written several books including The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World, The Karma of Brown Folk, and Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting: Afro-Asian Connections and the Myth of Cultural Purity, and is also published on a regular basis in several periodicals and websites. On October 20, he will be speaking on the topic of reclaiming the public's role in democracy and the government.
Following his talk, we will break into smaller groups and discuss different approaches to increasing involvement in our democracy, and what steps citizens can take to become more active citizens. To assist in framing the discussion we are using a guide from the National Issues Forum about different approaches to increasing participation in democracy.
On the night of the event a full dinner will be served before Vijay's speech.
